He's certainly left an indelible impression on this world. Nevertheless, his mythos was carefully crafted and its inertia sustained through intense marketing. His feats were no less exemplary than the next fortune 500 CEO yet, his followers and admirers have elevated his iconography to pseudo-religious worship. While I may invoke the ire of his cult following, he is but a mere man.

*Stepping onto my self-righteous pedestal*
Kudos to the creator for his creativity; however, starving children in Africa just doesn't sound or look sexy. While most of us are inclined to help in some way to avoid the misery they endure, the take away message does very little to compel us into action. Meanwhile, if we can hurl profanities at Siri to gauge her response for a few laughs, then we'd be willing to spend an hour in line to empty out our wallet/purses for the latest device.

Re: Masculine Emasculation

I acknowledge that your article is more of an opinion piece than anything else, so in this frame of mind. I wasn’t necessarily about to take much of it seriously. Unfortunately, there were sections of it which I found offensive, and after some consideration I decided that since your opinion had been made public via this publication, I would make mine known as well in response. The following will delve into what I perceived to be the consistent homophobic undertones of the article. Associating the word “pansifying”, with its negative connotation, to the fabricated process of “homosexualization” is utterly revolting. It is undeniable that the idea of a pansy reflects weakness and to link that to homosexuality cannot be seen as anything but offensive. Moving on to the word “wussification”, which one can only assume derives from the word “wuss”, is also equated with weakness. Restated in the context you presented the word:

“But even more alarming in the present day ‘wussification’ of the modern straight male is the absence of a strong Ward Cleaver type role model for our generation of young men. This has been a source of much consternation and lead to a lot of confused guys”.

I would be hard pressed to understand this as anything but an insinuation that the image of a “homosexual”-like man that you work very hard to construct and project in your article as the downfall of mankind, is somehow inferior to that of a “straight man”. To address, the latter sentence in the aforementioned quote, I find it troubling that you would imply that the representation of a minority in pop culture should be condemned for “confusing” the majority that has repressed them for so long. One would think that being of a minority ourselves, we would appreciate a greater representation of other minorities in pop culture, and dare I say, even support it’s progression toward the idea of equality and representation of open-mindedness. In sum, while I accept that you are very much entitled to your opinion of how you define the social construction of “masculinity”, I encourage you to consider how spreading your ideals upon the public, some of whom may be influenced by your words, affect your very kind, the male gender. I find that the ideology of masculinity is repressive, if nothing else. It confines young boys to a predefined role and condemns any sort of aversion from the mould. We should be embracing the fact that because we are breaking the barrier of a once stereotypically stoic, brooding, and physically built male, more men can be encouraged to be who they are without feeling shame that they have somehow failed to meet the gold standard of “masculinity”. I just hope you can challenge the mainstream thoughts on this issue, embrace the freedom of being who you are and stop looking back to a past of confinement, social repression, and shame.

I think it's somewhat unfair that Steve Jobs' picture was used, but I can see the point. When any ordinary human being dies, no one mourns over them other than their close loved ones and some people don't even have that. Yet when someone in a prominent role or someone who is looked at as being a hero (i.e., police), that's all we hear about in the news and other media. That's not fair! I shouldn't have to hear about one person's death more than another's. Their life isn't more important than another person's.
But I understand that because Jobs and other figures, such as Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, were so influential and touched so many people's lives, then of course millions will be "crying" for them.

I think the point is entirely being missed. Most of us aren't able to make a difference in the lives of a million starving children, but we can each contribute towards helping at least once child affected by the drought survive and not become an unfortunate statistic in a database. If each of us takes on that responsibility then those numbers will add up to millions to children who are alive and well instead of being the objects of armchair sympathy and pity without pro-activeness.

Yes Jobs was an inspirational individual but it's pretty unfortunate that some people can't seem to dedicate the same level of energy that they spent on grieving his loss and promoting his work on bringing awareness to some of the pressing issues that surround us- things such as poverty. Sometimes you need to pull shock tactics to get people to give notice to important issues- it seems to have worked since this poster is getting a lot of attention and debate!

Yes Jobs was an inspirational individual but it’s pretty unfortunate that some people can’t seem to dedicate the same level of energy that they spent on grieving his loss and promoting his work on bringing awareness to some of the pressing issues that surround us- things such as poverty. Sometimes you need to pull shock tactics to get people to give notice to important issues- it seems to have worked since this poster is getting a lot of attention and debate!

Steve Jobs changed the way we live our world. He defined today's society and he paved the way for the future of innovation and technology. It is wrong to put these two picture beside each other.
